What is the NBT and do I have to write it?

The National Benchmark Tests (NBT) are standardised tests that assess your academic readiness for university.

There are two tests:

• AQL (Academic and Quantitative Literacy) — tests reading comprehension and numeracy reasoning.
• Mathematics (MAT) — tests mathematical reasoning (required for science, engineering, and maths-heavy programmes).

Which universities require it?

The NBT is required by many major universities including UCT, Wits, Stellenbosch, UP, UKZN, and UJ — especially for competitive programmes.

Do you have to write it?

• It depends on the university and the programme.
• Check each university's prospectus or their website under "admissions requirements".
• Even if not compulsory, a good NBT score can strengthen your application.

When and where?

• Tests are written at registered test centres around the country.
• Register at www.nbt.ac.za.
• Tests are offered from September to January each year.
