What is the difference between a diploma and a degree?

Both are valid qualifications — the best choice depends on your goals.

Degree (offered at universities)

• Takes 3–4 years (or longer for professional degrees like Medicine or Law).
• More theoretical and academic in nature.
• Generally required for careers in law, medicine, engineering, accounting, etc.
• Minimum APS requirements are typically higher.

Diploma (offered at universities of technology / TVET colleges)

• Takes 2–3 years.
• More practical and vocational in focus.
• Great for careers in IT, engineering technology, business, design, etc.
• Generally lower APS requirements.

Which is better?

Neither is universally better. A diploma from a good university of technology can lead to an excellent career. Many employers value practical skills highly. If your career goal requires a degree (e.g. doctor, attorney, CA), then study for a degree. Otherwise, choose based on what suits your learning style and career path.
