I got NSFAS funding but there is no space in the university residence. Will NSFAS pay for private accommodation?

Yes, NSFAS does cover private (off-campus) accommodation, but with important conditions:

  • The accommodation must be accredited by your university.
  • You need to apply through your university's student housing office — not directly with NSFAS.
  • NSFAS pays an allowance (the cap varies by university and changes each year).
  • The university disburses the money to you or directly to the landlord.

Steps to follow:

  1. Confirm with your university which private residences are accredited.
  2. Apply for accredited accommodation through the student housing office.
  3. Ensure the lease agreement is in your name.
  4. Submit the required documentation to your financial aid office.

Non-accredited accommodation will not be covered, so always verify accreditation first.
